Kidsafe WA in the Kimberley

The Kidsafe WA team recently travelled to the Kimberley to deliver our child injury prevention workshops and incursions. Starting in Broome, our team joined in with Fair Game for their after-school hours activities at the Broome PCYC – with a special visit from Gilbert the Lizard, Horizon Power’s electrical safety mascot. During the week, we visited One Arm Point Remote Community School and Nyikina Mangala Community School to talk to students about how they can reduce the risk of injury at home, on the road, and at play. We loved hearing about the fun students get up to on the weekends and what steps they take to keep themselves and each other safe.

With Horizon Power being an ongoing supporter of our north WA regional travel, our team is dedicated to spreading electrical safety messages to families throughout the Pilbara and Kimberley regions. Safety messages and prevention tips are particularly important for communities in regional WA as they typically have less access to services and must travel long distances to access emergency treatment for injuries and accidents. During our regional visits, Kidsafe WA raises awareness of the common causes of electrical injury and provides practical steps to reduce the risk of accidents in and around the home.

At the end of our week in Broome, our team was lucky enough to participate in Garnduwa’s Deadly Diva Day – an event aimed at educating and supporting young women in the region. Our team joined in with a game of footy and took part in a range of activities promoting positive mental and physical health. It was great to chat with the Garnduwa team and other service providers about their community programs throughout the Kimberley.

A key highlight from this visit was the many conversations our team had with local students, parents, teachers, and organisations, as well as learning about the communities that we were visiting. It’s essential for our team at Kidsafe WA to collaborate with other service providers and community members to ensure our child injury prevention programs are suitable for their needs. A big thank you to everyone involved in this visit – we can’t wait to visit again soon.

Kidsafe WA would like to thank Horizon Power and the Department of Health WA for their ongoing support of our regional travel.
