Kidsafe WA has recently completed the development of a Portable Safety Demonstration House for the Home Safety program. This dollhouse will be a transportable model for the Safety Demonstration House set up at Kidsafe WA’s office in West Leederville.
The Portable Safety Demonstration House mirrors the rooms of a typical family home and includes a living room, bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, laundry and outside areas. The house is designed to demonstrate best practice safety measures to protect children from injuries.
Points of potential injury in the home are highlighted using hazard signs to initiate discussion points on injury prevention methods. For example, this may include a sign on the corner of a TV cabinet indicating that the recommended safety feature could be a silicon corner protector. Physical examples of household items with child safety features are also used within the house. An example of these features includes the use of a lock on a cabinet with washing liquids stored inside.
The Safety Demonstration House is available for guided tours for school groups, parent groups, professionals and any other group interested in child safety. The Portable Safety Demonstration House is to be used with adults and children as a collaborative, interactive tool to facilitate conversations about the most common causes of injury within the home. Additionally, this will provide a visible demonstration tool of tips and points mentioned in the Kidsafe WA Guide to Homes and Home Safety Checklist.
If you were at Playgroup WA’s 50th birthday, you may have already gotten to play with our newest addition. If not, keep an eye out for our Portable Safety Demonstration House at upcoming community events and trips!
